ケータイ - A remarkable thing that still exists -
Post #29 - Written by djm in 2025/07/21

The phones of our era.
Lovely phones we use everyday.

In this world we have phones, we have them separated in several categories, smart-phones and dumb-phones, we also separate them in terms of what type of phone they are, whether it being a stationary, semi-stationary, fax, whatever, I don't know about fax though, lol.

Now, before smart-phones we had normal phones which in this day and age are called "dumb-phones" because, well, they're not smart phones, they're technically dumb and don't have the features new smart-phones have. One of the versions of phones that is the most looked up onto are the fun, amazing and satisfying flip-phones, they're majestic, feel nice and the sensation you receive from flipping it with one hand because "you want to be cool". Good times

Nowadays, they're dead and are nowadays replaced by devices running Mozilla OS or whatever the cursed abomination is called, it runs slow, not that many things work on it and is generally the worst thing to own, but hey, at least it can run WhatsApp right? Right?

If you have a phone like that, please, and I do mean PLEASE. Get rid of it. Even if it does the job you want just get rid of it for a standard phone from 2015-2018, they're generally just as cheap as the phone itself and can get you more stuff than whatever the cursed creation that is Mozilla OS running phones usually represent themselves

But you think to yourself "Hey, I like flip phones! I ain't getting a smart-phone or a normal keypad phone, that's just too gosh darn boring!" and I will understand, BlackBerry phones suck bull and usually normal keypad phones are extinct or run awful software, but did you know there's a type of phone that will fulfill your lust for flip-phones and a decent phone that supports things?

Let's talk ケータイ

ケータイ is the name of this category, in Japanese it means "portable", just turned into Katakana(horrible), they also use a different nickname, ガラホ which means GaraHo, being Galapagos Phones, that exists because Japan had a complicated but interesting history of having a different path of their phone evolutions, look it up on the internet if you are interested(or click here for a Japanese explanation on what they are in technical terms), now, where was I? Oh, right, keitai, that's just a nickname for the specific category, for normal phones they use スマホ or just スマートフォン, they're not gonna be using that for normal phones, instead, the vocab is used for a different type of phone, the one that you would be guessing is a flip-phone

These phones are usually slender-tall android flip-phones

A slender flipping keitai.
It's a slender flipping keitai!!!
, they're a neat invention created to somewhat be relevant to the audience after the iPhone and Android phone craze, they're still flip phones, but they run a proper OS, basically imagine an android phone but they got rid of the touch screen, gave the phone a keypad and added a launcher which supports the buttons and fill it with other crap, that's your keitai.

Most of these phones do not use Google services, instead, they use the operator exclusive app services where you can download apps from, however, you do need to own an account meaning you have to be residing in Japan since they don't accept foreign numbers except for +81 regions

SO, why am I talking about these phones? Well, you can put a bunch of stuff on them without the account, you can add banking apps, music apps, java game emulators, a lot of stuff, just as long as they're able to be navigated using the phones D-Pad since these phones do not support touch emulation!(However, if you are getting a phone that is old then that statement is semi-true, on older keitai phones there's a TOUCH CRUISER function, allowing you to enable the cursor for apps that are not made to be compatible with the D-Pad function).

The best way to get a keitai that will work in the modern life is to look out for a phone using the following criteria's:

  • Run Android 8.1 or better
  • Released in 2018-2020
  • Have Felica(NFC but as a Japanese internal standard created by SONY, existed for a long time ago)
  • Are matching your carriers frequencies(I can't state this enough, this is the most important factor, some phones can support 4G but can only receive 3G because the bands are of different standard, for example, P-01J supports 4G but don't support international standard in Russia and Europe, thus being limited to 3G)
  • Are FULLY unlocked from the operators(NTT DoCoMo, au, SoftBank, etc.)
  • Haven't been used much and have small marks, this is important because it will depend on the phones battery life and their speed

To preload apps, you must find them on the internet, I use F-Droid for some of these and scout the internet for the original download links for several apps I need, after downloading, you can pre-load them onto the device by using ADB, if you aren't tech-savvy enough then WebADB does the job as it has a friendly interface

Panasonic P-Smart P-01J.Sharp Aquos SH-03L.Fujitsu arrows F-03L.
The triple trouble I used during my lifetime as of 2025/07/11.

I used 3 keitais in my entire life and the last one I have is the best of them all, being released in 2019 and supporting everything I need, payments, music, videos, etc. The newer, the better, but NOT TOO NEW! These days carriers are getting rid of some features from keitais to make people switch over to proper smartphones.

In the next post, I'll probably write up about the phones I owned and how good they are on the spectrum.

It seems that Sharp has removed the page related to the explanation of Keitais. I'll get a different link at some point whenever possible
