Goodbye skype, hello skype
Post #10 - Written by jobz in 2025/05/07

Skype still works as of 2025/07/03, tested with v8.138.0.214

Welp, you guys heard the news, Skype is going down baby and never coming back

I used Skype back then to call my mom when she was out for work, it was a very good piece of software that worked, it never failed you and the main point of it was "You want to have the ability to talk with someone? This is it." and it was great at it.

Then, Microsoft buys it, it all goes to shit, they start twisting and distorting Skype into something that was completely different, then Discord appeared. And everyone went there while Skype rotted away

Then at some point they returned it back into its normal self... but use the servers of the Teams product, which is a corporate meeting system. It wasn't really good.

The Skype logo circa 2012, probably the best logo to ever exist.

2 months ago as of writing this, Microsoft has announced they will be shutting down Skype in favor of the Teams platform, which is like forcing the remaining 5 people to use something completely different and also something thats 2x worse. After that, many people have started getting on the Skype End Train and saying how good the software was and people did use skype either talk about the same thing or how it was shit.

Now, Skype is shut down, they shut it down on 5th of May and is no longer possible to use the program... or is it? Here's a screenshot I took today of me using Skype after its shutdown.

The client still running and stuff, neat thing

The reason for that? The client is basically a Teams client because like I mentioned, Skype uses the same servers as Teams, actually, since they use the same servers you can talk with the people that use Teams and vice versa. It's stupid.

Anyways, they will probably patch this out at some point by denying requests from the clients that use the certain client. Skype is pretty much the main foundation of peopel communicating back in the day, there were so many group chats and talks done there, hell, you could call abroad using it if you used Skype Credit and their VoIP system, it was also p2p so it was basically better than any other alternative there was(except MSN xdddd), it was basically a part of everyones childhood or early days of using the internet. nuff said
