< Return to the blog Chromium enshittification GOD! I cannot believe how much I wan't to express the anger to the recent enshittification of software in the recent times, but this is just the straw for me I. HATE. CHROMIUM BASED APPLICATIONS They're the most annoying thing possible! They pretty much consume all of your RAM, not giving a fuck about leaving some for games and stuff, and you're also forced into USING it! This is basically happening since 2019 and many thing you use are probably based on Chromium. But this all comes at a cost Low end users, they have to suffer with the entire torturous pain in the ass that is Chromium in everything. Many programs do that, such as Discord, Steam, Anki, etc. Now, I have 8 GB of RAM at my disposal here and I can't even play any of modern day games without stuttering all the time due to the Chromium processes taking up 80% of my memory. It's pretty cool and stuff, but sometimes that Chromium thing is probably REALLY SHIT, doens't load all the time and just breaks at some points, and that is Steam Steam decided to transition to Chromium around 2018, and with that they took all the optimization and reliability out of their clients, the entire client update which came out in 2021 or so, I can't say for sure, has gotten rid of the entire Skinning system, leaving hundreds of creations unusable. And the worst part is that the client became more prone to long loading times as well as more bugs, sometimes an entire page didn't load and it showed a black banner saying "Something went wrong." or something, it's just bull. So, after having to deal with the nonsense that is the new steam, i've decided to do something, i've decided to downgrade ![]() The steam client that I use, it has CEF, sure, but it doesn't consume as much and I can disable it whenever I can, much better than not being able to use the client what-so-ever when the chromium is disabled on the newer version. This honestly made my experience 2x as good than I had it with new Steam, it runs marginally better and it still works with all the games, the best part is that it's ALMOST entirely VGUI and doesn't eat the ram. There is a client from 2018 that's exclusively VGUI and Tenfoot but it doesn't work with modern Steam servers and their auth. Bummer. I really hope at some point companies go back to working on programs WITHOUT relying on CEF or atleast make it run better, but, unfortunately, we live in an era where computers are so powerful enough corps don't need to care about the optimization.
